Google Ads conversion tracking not working usually shows up in one of two ways. The status in your account turns yellow or red, or the status looks fine while Conversions quietly drop. Both have a short list of causes, and Google’s own tools can confirm most of them in minutes.
This guide starts with what each status means, then works through nine causes in the order we check them. Each comes with the fix. If you would rather have the whole setup checked, that is what our Google Ads conversion tracking service covers.
What the conversion status in Google Ads tells you
Every conversion action in Google Ads has a status, shown in the Summary table under Goals. Google’s troubleshooter lists five: Active, Needs attention, Misconfigured, Awaiting conversions and Removed (Google Ads Help). Older help pages still use Unverified, Inactive and No recent conversions, so you may see either set.
| Status | What Google says it means | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Everything is working as intended | Nothing; confirm the numbers look right |
| Needs attention | There are action items, but recording has not stopped | Hover over the status for the action items |
| Misconfigured | Conversions stopped recording, from a setup error or a broken tag | Causes 1 to 3: the tag and its container |
| Awaiting conversions | No conversions in the last 7 days | Cause 7: a new action, paused campaigns or low traffic |
| Removed | The action was deleted or archived | Whether it was replaced by another action |
| Unverified (older label) | The tag for this action has not fired yet | Cause 1: is the tag on the conversion page? |
| Inactive or Tag inactive (older label) | The tag is not being seen | Causes 1 and 2: tag placement, ID and label |
| No recent conversions (older label) | No paid clicks led to conversions in the last 7 to 14 days | Cause 7, then campaign settings |
Hover over a status to see Google’s own explanation and next steps. Then use the causes below to confirm it.

Cause 1: the tag is not on the conversion page
The most common cause is a tag that is not on the page people reach after converting. Google defines Unverified as a tag that “has not yet fired” (Google Ads Help).
Open the thank-you or confirmation page, view its source, and search for the event snippet. A placed tag leaves this comment in the page code (same source):
<!-- Event snippet for {Action name} conversion page -->
If the comment is missing, the tag is on the wrong page or not deployed. It may also sit behind a condition that never runs. Place it on the page that loads after the conversion, not on the form page itself.
Cause 2: the wrong ID, label or value format
A tag can fire and still record nothing when its details are wrong. Google lists the checks. The send_to value must match the Google Ads interface exactly. The value must not contain a currency symbol or commas. Copy-and-paste can also break the JavaScript (Google Ads Help).
A correct event snippet looks like this, with your own conversion ID and label:
<script>
gtag('event', 'conversion', {
'send_to': 'AW-123456789/AbCdEfGhIjKlMnOp',
'value': 129.0,
'currency': 'USD',
'transaction_id': '100245'
});
</script>
The conversion ID is the number after AW-, unique to your account. The label after the slash matches one conversion action (same source). A transaction ID also stops one purchase being counted twice (Google Ads Help).
Cause 3: Tag Manager changes not published, or no Conversion Linker
In Google Tag Manager, a tag that works in Preview mode does nothing on the live site until the container is published. Google says you “will need to publish those changes to make those changes operational on your website” (Tag Manager Help).
Check that the latest version is published, and that the Conversion Linker tag exists. The linker stores ad click information in first-party cookies on your domain. Google advises the All Pages trigger in most cases (Tag Manager Help). Without it, conversions on a later page cannot be tied to the click.
Cause 4: auto-tagging is off, or the click ID is lost
Auto-tagging adds a GCLID to each ad click, the identifier that ties a click to its Conversion (Google Ads Help). If auto-tagging is off, many conversions cannot be attributed to the click that caused them.
The click ID can also be lost on the way. A redirect that drops URL parameters removes the GCLID before the page loads. Click one of your own ads, or add a test parameter to the final URL. Then check the address bar on the landing page. If the parameter is gone, fix the redirect.
Cause 5: consent blocks the tag
On sites with a cookie banner, a visitor who declines can stop Google Ads tags from storing what they need. With consent mode, Google Ads models the Conversions of unconsented users rather than losing them (Google Ads Help).
If tags only load after consent, declined visitors are lost entirely. If consent mode is installed incorrectly, the tag may wait for a consent signal that never arrives. Test the page with consent both accepted and declined. Then check that the tag still sends its signal in both cases (Google Ads Help).
Cause 6: the action is secondary or left out of the goal
A conversion action can record perfectly and still show nothing in the Conversions column. Secondary actions are for observation only. They appear in All conversions and are not used for bidding (Google Ads Help).
Check the Action optimization column on the Summary page. The action you bid on should be primary, and its goal should be included in the campaign. Accounts under a manager can also lose tracking here. With cross-account tracking on, actions in the managed accounts “will stop tracking conversions for new clicks” (Google Ads Help).
Cause 7: the action is too new, or traffic is too low
Awaiting conversions means no Conversions were recorded in the last 7 days. Google says the usual reasons are an action under 48 hours old, paused campaigns, or too little traffic (Google Ads Help).
Reporting also lags. Google Ads tag data usually appears within 3 hours under last click, and within 15 hours under other models (Google Ads Help). Wait before diagnosing a brand-new action. After a tag change, Google suggests allowing 24 to 48 hours for data to appear (Google Ads Help).
Cause 8: the GA4 import is incomplete
If Google Ads imports Conversions from GA4, three steps must all be done. The GA4 property is linked to the Google Ads account (Analytics Help). The event is marked as a key event in GA4. A conversion is then created from it in Google Ads (Analytics Help).
Imported Conversions also take longer to arrive than tag Conversions. We cover the differences between the two sources in why GA4 and Google Ads conversions don’t match.
Cause 9: Shopify thank-you page scripts were removed
Shopify Google Ads conversion tracking stops working when it depended on additional scripts on the Thank you or Order status page. Shopify deprecated script tags, additional scripts and checkout.liquid on those pages. For Plus merchants, the removal date was 28 August 2025 (Shopify Changelog).
Tracking now belongs in Shopify’s pixels. Shopify describes pixels as “JavaScript code snippets that run on your online store, customer accounts pages, or store checkout”. They are managed from Customer events in the admin (Shopify Help Center). Check that the purchase still reaches Google Ads after any checkout upgrade.
Conversion tracking setup is incomplete: what that alert means
The conversion tracking setup is incomplete alert means an action exists, but Google Ads has not confirmed it records correctly. It also hurts delivery. Google warns that when conversion tracking “isn’t set up correctly, your ad may have limited serving” (Google Ads Help).
Work through causes 1 to 3 first, because an incomplete setup is nearly always a tag problem. Then run Tag Assistant from the action’s status. Hover, select Troubleshoot, connect to your site and complete a test conversion (Google Ads Help).
How to stop conversion tracking breaking again
Conversion tracking usually breaks after a change somewhere else. Typical triggers are a site release, a checkout upgrade, a new cookie banner or a Tag Manager publish. The tag itself rarely fails on its own.
Three habits catch most breaks early:
- Check the status weekly for every primary action, and after every release.
- Run one test conversion after any change to the confirmation page, the checkout or the consent banner.
- Compare with your backend. If orders or leads in your store or CRM hold steady while Google Ads Conversions drop, the tracking is the first suspect.
Rather not run these checks yourself? We set up and monitor Google Ads conversion tracking as an optional monthly service.
The nine causes at a glance
The table pairs each cause with the status it usually produces and the fix. Use it to decide where to look first.
| Cause | Status you usually see | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Tag not on the conversion page | Unverified or Misconfigured | Place the tag on the page that loads after the conversion |
| 2. Wrong ID, label or value format | Inactive or Needs attention | Copy send_to exactly; send value as a plain number |
| 3. Tag Manager changes not published, or no Conversion Linker | Unverified or Needs attention | Publish the container; fire the Conversion Linker on all pages |
| 4. Auto-tagging off, or the GCLID lost in redirects | Active, but fewer conversions | Turn on auto-tagging; keep URL parameters through redirects |
| 5. Consent blocks the tag | Active, but fewer conversions | Implement consent mode correctly |
| 6. Action secondary or excluded from goals | Active, but zero in the Conversions column | Set the action to primary and include it in the goal |
| 7. Too new, or too little traffic | Awaiting conversions | Wait for data; allow for reporting delays |
| 8. GA4 import incomplete | No conversions from the import | Link GA4, mark the key event, create the import |
| 9. Shopify thank-you scripts removed | Misconfigured or Awaiting conversions | Move tracking to Shopify customer events (pixels) |
Getting every cause right at once matters most when many locations report into one account.
How to fix Google Ads conversion tracking not working, step by step
Work through these in order. Each step rules out one cause before the next.
- Read the status of each conversion action in Goals, Conversions, Summary.
- Find the event snippet in the source of the confirmation page.
- Check send_to, the conversion ID and label, and the value format.
- Publish the Tag Manager container and confirm the Conversion Linker fires on all pages.
- Click a test ad and confirm the GCLID survives every redirect.
- Test with consent accepted and declined.
- Set the bidding action to primary and include its goal in the campaign.
- Run Tag Assistant from the status and complete a test conversion.
- Wait 3 to 48 hours, then confirm the status and the Conversions column.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my Google Ads not converting?
Google Ads may be converting without the Conversions being recorded, so check tracking before changing ads. Once Tag Assistant confirms the tag fires, a real shortfall usually comes from the search terms, the offer or the landing page. A mismatched page is common. We cover it in landing page experience below average.
What are conversion diagnostics in Google Ads?
Conversion diagnostics in Google Ads is a report that checks the health of enhanced conversions. Open it from the Summary page under Goals, through an action’s status details. It rates the setup Excellent, Good, Needs attention or No recent data (Google Ads Help). It flags missing customer data and recent recording gaps.
How do you activate conversion tracking in Google Ads?
You activate Google Ads conversion tracking by creating a conversion action and adding a Google tag to your site. Google says you “add a Google tag, or code snippet, to your website or mobile app code” (Google Ads Help). If you use Tag Manager, confirm the Conversion Linker is set up. Then test with Tag Assistant.
Does Google Ads track conversions automatically?
Google Ads does not track website conversions until you set them up. Website conversion measurement needs a Google tag or code snippet on your site (Google Ads Help). An import, such as GA4 key events, also works. Until then, clicks are recorded but the sales or leads they produce are not.
